What is a grapefruit diet?
Also known as the Hollywood diet or the 18-day diet, the grapefruit diet has been in existence since the 1930s. It is a short term diet with different variations to suit the personal needs of the person who is dieting. It generally consists of eating one grapefruit for every meal, meat, eggs, and other foods rich in fat and protein and certain vegetables. It lasts for ten to twelve days, with two days off, and does not require one to exercise. Sugar, fruits other than grapefruit, sweet and starchy vegetables, and grains are to be avoided.
How to go on a grapefruit diet?
Though there are many versions of this diet, the basic calorie consumption in one day stays between 800-1000 calories. The diet allows people to use seasonings and spices, making it easier to follow for ten to twelve days. The basic meal plan looks something like this:
- Breakfast- Two boiled eggs, two bacon strips, and one half of a grapefruit.
- Lunch- Salad with meat or chicken breast and half of a grapefruit.
- Dinner- Low-calorie meat, green vegetables, half of a grapefruit, and green tea.
This is what the meal plan should look like in case one wishes to follow the diet. Although there have not been any scientific claims to the fat-burning properties of grapefruit, people who have been on this diet have claimed to have lost weight.
